Time to Relax – Methods That May Help Relieve TMD Symptoms
Are you one of the many who suffer from TMD? If so, you know the importance of staying relaxed as a way to avoid aggravating your jaw or initiating a flare-up of your condition. We know that last year was a stressful time for many and in turn many of our new patients were diagnosed with TMD for the first time. We want to share some simple relaxation methods that you can do in the comfort of your own home. Having not only a relaxed jaw but a relaxed body as well will help you better manage your symptoms.
Start the Day Positively
It is a wonderful idea to start the day on a positive note. This could mean something different to everyone. Maybe you like to meditate or practice mindful breathing. Or perhaps you enjoy journaling or writing down your thoughts. No matter what you choose to do, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to prepare for the day so you do not feel rushed and tense.
Exercise Daily
Daily exercise has been proven to help aid in relaxation. A brisk daily walk or yoga are two great ways to get movement throughout the day without strenuous exercise that can lead to muscle tension.
Correct Your Posture
If you sit for long periods of time be sure to be mindful of the way you are sitting. Sit as straight as possible with your shoulders back and avoid hunching over. If you are driving for an extended time, keep the driver’s seat in an upright position. When using your phone, do your best not to remain looking down for too long.
What to Avoid
Along with the positive methods we are suggesting, we also want to give a reminder of certain habits that are best to be avoided when you experience TMD:
- Cradling your phone between your ear and chin when talking
- Nail biting
- Biting pens or other items
- Opening your mouth wide to eat something such as a sandwich or apple
