Stress And Halloween Can Affect TMD
Halloween is just around the corner, and for many, that means parties, costumes, scary movies, and, of course, candy. For temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) patients, the combination of stress and festivities can make symptoms worse. Understanding this connection can help you manage TMD more effectively and get through Halloween.
Stress and TMD
We know that stress is a TMD trigger. Stress causes muscle tension, especially in the jaw. This can make us clench or grind our teeth (bruxism), which can make TMD symptoms worse. Combine the stress you may already be feeling with the pressures of Halloween, and you have a recipe for candy-coated disaster!
Halloween and TMD
- Halloween can be particularly challenging for patients with TMD because, in addition to stress, dietary changes come into play
- The excitement and stress of planning for Halloween can lead to jaw clenching, which will make existing TMD symptoms worse
- Halloween means candy. Even if you avoid having it at home, you may find it at work or at social events. Sugary foods can lead to inflammation, which makes TMD symptoms worse
- Holidays often disrupt our routines and sleep patterns. Lack of sleep can heighten stress, which, in turn, makes TMD symptoms worse
Managing TMD During Halloween
It is possible to enjoy Halloween while keeping your TMD symptoms in check.
- Relax – Try deep breathing exercises, meditation, or gentle yoga to reduce muscle tension
- Watch what you eat – Candy is great, we know, but balance sweet treats with healthier options. Drink lots of water and eat anti-inflammatory foods to help with symptoms
- Keep your sugar intake low – By all means, eat some candy, but don’t overdo it
- Stand up straight – Remember that good posture is important to manage TMD
- Keep moving – Regular exercise is always good for you. It can relieve stress and tension and make you feel more relaxed
Having fun at Halloween is a must, but be mindful of your condition. Keep stress and changes to your diet to a minimum. By taking the time to implement stress-reducing activities, you can have a great time with family and friends!
