This Time Of Year Can Be Worse For TMD Sufferers
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! If you sang those popular lyrics in your head while reading, then you are one of the many who are starting preparations for the upcoming holiday season. While the holiday season can leave many filled with joy, it is well known that the holidays can also be a huge cause of stress for many. Sitting around a Thanksgiving table with your uncle questioning your life decisions or shopping for hours, either in person or online, for the perfect holiday gift can leave anyone’s jaw twitching in discomfort. For those that suffer with TMD, it can be even worse. Read on to learn some techniques to manage your TMD during the stressful holiday season.
Stress and anxiety can be a major catalyst for a flare-up of symptoms related to TMD. With helpful suggestions in your back pocket, you can be prepared to manage the issues before they become unbearable.
Rest, Rest, Rest
- It is easy, during the holiday season, to push yourself and not get the adequate sleep and rest that your body needs. If you are planning to travel, it is especially important to plan ahead and prepare your body for the added stress. Plan your trip accordingly and give yourself ample time to cut down on stress.
Follow a Recommended TMD Diet
- Avoid foods that you know will cause flare-ups. While the holidays are a time to treat yourself, it’s also when you should weigh the risks versus the rewards. If you are flying, be sure to avoid chewing gum. Other foods to avoid are crunchy foods like raw carrots, chewy foods like tough meat, and foods that can cause inflammatory issues like processed foods and dairy.
Ask For Help
- If you become easily overwhelmed with holidays and the task at hand, don’t be afraid to ask loved ones for help. Family and friends love to lend a helping hand when asked.
