How Winter Affects TMD & What You Can Do About It
What’s your favorite season? If you suffer from the effects of TMD, you may not be that fond of winter and prefer the warmer months. As it is only February, we are right in the middle of the winter season, with spring over a month away. Although our winters aren’t as bad as some other areas of the country, we still get freezing temperatures this time of year, especially at night. The cold weather is known to affect joints and muscles. Because the TMJ is a joint, patients receiving treatment to help with this condition can feel the effects of the cold weather more than others. Read on to learn more and get tips on how to manage your symptoms in the cold weather.
Cold Weather and TMD
We don’t know about you, but we are dreaming of the days of warmer weather. If you suffer from TMD, you may not be a fan of the colder weather we experience during the winter months. Although the weather is more mild here than in other areas, we see our fair share of freezing temperatures. When the body is cold, the muscles tend to tighten as a way to keep the body warm. This is not ideal if you suffer from TMD. Here are some tips to help ease discomfort during the winter:
Bundle Up
One of the easiest things you can do to stay warm is make sure you are dressed properly. Before heading outside, make sure you are wearing a jacket and use a scarf to keep your jaw nice and warm.
Stay Active
Even though it may be cold, it is still important to get daily exercise and move your body. Movement helps to keep your muscles and joints loose.
Make Sure Your House is Warm
We know that everyone likes to keep their homes at different temperatures. It is important that your home stays warm enough to be comfortable. This is extremely important at night when the temperature drops. Although you may have a higher heating bill, your body will thank you.
