Jaw Feeling Sore?
You probably already know which foods trigger your TMD symptoms. Most days, you may not have to think much about it, but when your jaw starts feeling tired, tight, or sore, returning to familiar eating habits can help you get through meals more comfortably.
Think Easier, Not Perfect
When your jaw is sore, sometimes the easiest approach is to change the texture or preparation of your meals. Cook vegetables until they’re softer. Choose fish or another tender protein instead of something that requires prolonged chewing. Cut meat, fruit, and other foods into smaller pieces. Yogurt, eggs, soups, pasta, rice, mashed potatoes, smoothies, soft fruits, and well-cooked vegetables are nutritious and easy on your jaw.
Size Matters Too
A thick sandwich, large burger, or whole apple may require you to open wider than feels comfortable. Cutting food into smaller, manageable bites can reduce that strain while still allowing you to enjoy many of the same foods. This is one of those small adjustments that is easy to forget until your jaw reminds you.
Know When Something Isn’t Worth the Workout
When your jaw is already irritated, crunchy, hard, sticky, and especially chewy foods can add unnecessary strain. That may mean temporarily skipping things like gum, nuts, hard candies, chewy candy, crunchy raw vegetables, tough meats, bagels, or foods that take a lot of effort to chew.
Let Your Symptoms Guide You
You know your jaw better now than you did when you first came to see us. If a meal leaves your jaw feeling fatigued or increases your discomfort, pay attention to that feedback. Switching to easier-to-chew foods for a while, along with the other strategies we recommended specifically for you, can help manage a flare-up. As your symptoms subside, gradually return to your usual choices.
Sometimes the Basics Are Worth Revisiting
Managing TMD often involves knowing how to respond when symptoms change. Even familiar advice is worth revisiting because life gets busy, routines change, and we sometimes forget the small adjustments that have helped us before. If your jaw is sore today, make dinner easy on it. Smaller bites, softer textures, and less chewing may be exactly what it needs.
If soreness is becoming more frequent, lasting longer than usual, or making it increasingly difficult to eat comfortably, let us know.
