What Is Causing My Headaches?
Do you suffer from routine headaches? Patients who have headaches experience significant discomfort that can affect daily life. Some patients may have difficulty completing everyday tasks. For patients who suffer from TMD, or temporomandibular disorder, it can be difficult to determine if your headaches are being caused by TMD or another outside factor. Read on to learn more about the difference between a TMD headache and other types of headaches.
Is Your Headache Caused by TMD?
When dealing with the effects of a headache, it can be tempting to find relief any way you can with little to no thought as to the cause of the headache. Oftentimes, concern begins to set in when headaches become more frequent and make it difficult to perform everyday tasks. Patients who suffer from TMD may often experience headaches, as it is one of the more common side effects. This leads to the question of how to know if a headache is caused by TMD or another factor. There are many different types of headaches such as migraines, tension headaches, cluster headaches, sinus headaches and more. Typically, TMD headaches are experienced in conjunction with other symptoms such as:
- Jaw or facial discomfort
- Popping or clicking of the jaw
- Limited movement of the jaw
- Tight facial muscles
Ways to Help TMD Headaches
Unfortunately, TMD headaches are often not treated in the same manner as other headaches because the root of the problem needs to be managed. If you are currently a patient and receiving treatment for TMD, you may be experiencing a flare-up of symptoms and need to visit our office. In the meantime, it may be helpful to resort to the tips we have given you to manage TMD rather than trying to manage headache itself. This includes going back to a soft diet, cutting foods into smaller pieces, eating smaller bites of food, and using warm moist heat.
