3 Tips For Keeping Sleep Apnea Under Control During The Holidays
Halloween has come and gone, November is here, and before you know it, the holiday season will be upon us. If you suffer from sleep apnea and are currently receiving treatment, it is important to continue with your treatment plan and scheduled appointments during this busy time. It would be a shame to let your holiday celebrations and activities sabotage your progress. Read on to learn more about what you can do to keep your sleep apnea under control during the holidays.
Don’t Let the Holiday Season Make Your Sleep Apnea Worse
This is the start of a crazy time of year for many people. It is easy to become overwhelmed and stressed with the added responsibilities and celebrations during this time of year. If you suffer from sleep apnea, we encourage you to put your health first to minimize the chance of a setback with your treatment. Here are three helpful tips to keep in mind during this time of year:
Maintain Your Routine
If you have established a bedtime routine that works for your sleep apnea, do your best to continue it throughout the holiday season. We know it can be challenging with celebrations, travel, and everything else on the to-do list. If you have a lot of responsibilities during the holidays, try your best to spread them out so you disrupt your routine as little as possible.
Change Up Your Holiday Plans
If you struggled last year with your holiday plans or found the holidays stressful, try changing them this year to better fit your needs and minimize the impact on your treatment progress. For example, if you traveled to visit friends or family last year and it did not go well, try inviting them to visit you instead. Although hosting may not eliminate 100% of the stress, you will at least be able to sleep in your own bed.
Be Mindful of Food Choices
We know the holidays are a time when food and beverages are in abundance. It is important to be mindful of your choices, enjoy treats and alcohol in moderation, and avoid eating too late at night, especially when you have late evening plans and parties to attend. Making a poor choice can significantly affect your sleep.
